85 Plains is a band of many flavors. Their songs range from blues rock, to chill acoustic songs, reggae, punk rock, and a jam or cover every now and then.
The band is composed of Charlie Hill, Sam Jaffe, Whitley Horn, and Kevin Bloom. Charlie, Sam, and Kevin had ideas for a band since the Summer of 2007. There was an immediate connection when they jammed for the first time in an old garage where mildew ran rampant (dubbed the rock and roll garage). Kevin met Steph in the Fall of 2008 and have been jamming together ever since. In the last days of the Summer of 2009 Charlie, Sam, and Kevin's ideas for a band became a reality when they formed 85 Plains.
Charlie Hill is also in the New Jersey based band, Other People's Friends, and has recorded several songs with them. He is the lead singer in most of 85 Plains songs. Whitley was previously in Other People's Friends with Charlie Hill. He was asked to play bass permanently for 85 plains after filling in for Steph Merinoff at one of their shows.
Whitley Horn got his first guitar in 6th grade, and started taking music more seriously about a year later. He eventually switched over to the bass guitar so that Other People's Friends would have a bassist. Along with OPF, he has played in numerous projects with his friends from his high school in New Jersey.
Sam Jaffe had experience in a Phish cover band. His drumming has been compared to Patrick Carney of the Black Keys, and John Bonham of Led Zeppelin.
Kevin Bloom is 85 Plains primary song writer. He has been writing songs since he was 4 years old. His lyrics often are personal, but he has also written social and political commentaries.
85 Plains recorded its first 5 song demo in 2009, released December 31. The band completed this album in just 5 hours, a display of their powerful band chemistry, as well as the adept production skills of our engineer, Eric Clemenzi.
